In essence, in so many areas the pattern of "moderates" and liberals in these matters has been to create difficulties for the men and women responsible for our nations defence and then sit back and point fingers at those attempting to clean each mess that they - the legislators - had themselves created.

Unfortunately for your argument, "malfeasance, criminality, imperialistic intent, and stupidity" are in fact endemic in members of the administration. Though the attitude of the Democratic establishment and the left deserves to be criticized, this administration is primarily responsible for the endless series of mind-boggling cock-ups that have placed our troops in an increasingly difficult position. If the CI strategy currently being employed by Petreaus (incuding cutting deals with the Ba'thists and Sunni tribes) had been initiated years ago, it would likely have already borne fruit. Now, alas, it may well be too little, too late.
